Catalytic converters are exhaust emission control components that are often called cats, and they are practically in every automobile on the road. Though they are commonly found, they are hardly ever talked about. Cats are usually used with internal combustion engines and need to work at scorching temperatures to be efficient. They are located underneath the vehicle near the exhaust outlet. And some cars have as many as four of them.    To help catalytic converters adjust quickly to the temperatures at which they are most effective, they are placed between the engine and muffler.
